A comprehensive suicide response strategy requires the consideration of universal, specific and targeted programs. Distress Centres is engaged at all levels: our 24/7 helpline accessible to everyone in the community; a tailored survivor support program to address the special needs of those struggling with the aftermath of suicide and/or homicide; and, new in 2015, the creation of innovative service delivery channels for our youngest users requiring emotional assistance. We were truly grateful to receive support from the Canada Post Mental Health Foundation for a community-based suicide e-resource centre, building an online linkage between knowledge and service for everyone, but in particular encouraging access for the next generation of users who are less dependent on telephones. Not only is the “in-between” generation of young adults a high-needs, underserviced group, but so too are the high-risk seniors with mental health concerns living marginalized lives in the community.
